Why we love it

Certainly one of the best Italian white wines, in the top 3 for us. Pomedes is also one of the first wines we started importing. Pomedes is a white wine with a never ending list of awards, from the 3 glasses Gambero Rosso to top rating on the Italian sommelier guide, but Pomedes is before anything else, a great white wine. A wine we fell in love immediately, after the first sip 20 years ago, an Italian white wine that could compete with the best French whites hands down.

A lightly oaked, rich, white wine from Friuli, a blend of Pinot Bianco, Friulano and Riesling grapes grown in the Colli Orientali area of Friuli Venezia Giulia, fermented and refined in new French barrique. This white wine is elegant and complex, aromatic, with aromas of fruits underlying hints of vanilla, where the oak is well balanced and doesn’t take over the aromaticy of the wine, a powerful white wine with an enduring aftertaste in the mouth.

This wine is named after a famous refuge in the Alps, Pomedes, where Roberto Scubla and a friend were caught by a storm when descending the mountains, and whilst waiting for the storm to pass, they shaped the wine.

The artisan who made it

Roberto Scubla is an amazing person who is very passionate about his wines. He took a big risk and left a safe job in the bank for an uncertain future amongst the vines and he has truly succeeded in what he was trying to achieve. His winery and vineyards are located in the Colli Orientali area of Friuli, north east of Italy, near the Slovenian border, where he grows native grapes like the Friulano and Verduzzo but also grapes that have found an ideal environment in Friuli such as the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon or the Sauvignon and all his wines have plenty of character and elegance.

Elegance and complexity with or without food this wine has it all in abundance. It went particularly well with a sea food and scallops starter and was equally at home with a much more earthy chicken and mushroom dish. A wine with Burgundian qualities which was also extremely enjoyable on its own. i am sure i will be back for more
