Why we love it
The Valpolicella Ripasso is another red wine produced in the Valpolicella area, and as the name says, it is obtained “repassing”, ripasso in Italian, the Valpolicella wine on the Amarone must for a few days to add body and character to the wine and then aged in barrels.
The Valpolicella Ripasso is also sometime called baby Amarone, definition we do not agree with, because the Amarone is a very different wine however, the Valpolicella Ripasso shows some of the Amarone characteristics and from a pure price point of view, it offers outstanding value for money, the Valpolicella Ripasso is a much easier and approachable wine compared to its big brother.
Our Valpolicella Ripasso is made from grapes grown in the most vocated area, hence the appellation “Classico” on the label, from vineyards located at about 400mt above sea level, and from a single vineyard called “ Le Quare”, resulting in a big, bold, elegant red wine, with a rich and complex nose, with scents of ripe fruit and spices and vanilla. On the palate the wine is warm, full and smooth with plenty of fruit, lively, perfectly balanced, ideal with stews or boiled meat.
The artisan who made it
Over the generations, the Gamba winery has been passed down from father to son and it is now run by the three brothers Giovanni, Giuseppe and Martino helped by their own sons and daughters. Located right in the heart of the Valpolicella Classico area and spanning six acres, they grow the classic Valpolicella grapes, from Corvina to Rondinella with which then they make the classic Valpolicella wines, from valpolicella to amarone, from valpolicella ripasso to a recioto della valpolicella.
